Pawnshop - Cruise O Matic

Rock'n'roll!!!!! Raw and dirty… as I prefer! It's the first time that I listened to a Pawnshop record (yes… I've missed Aloha From Saturn and still haven't heard it… I'm sorry…) and I'm really amazed listening to their powerful rock'n'roll aggression. The album is not very original, but it sounds really good and run fast from the first track to the last one. The opening songs Blissed Out / Mean Machine / Las Vegas are really three kickin' ass episodes based on incisive guitar riffs, catchy chorus (listen to Mean Machine!) and wonderful distortions, simply the perfect example of how have to sound a stoner'n'roll album and of how sound the whole work of the band! Somewhere the phantom of Kyuss appear as a warm light, for example in the good Thailand or in the tripping Living Zombie (the slowest and more psychedelic track of the CD, that grow until the furious ending part), but this would be just a compliment to the band, that revisit the magic of the stoner fathers with great results. The dusty sound of the title track than take a look back to the seventies, smelling of diesel and smoke. A great work! One of the best Beard Of Stars production, suggested to all the rock'n'roll maniacs and to the Kyuss fanatics.

Steak Number Eight - When The Candle Dies Out

Steak Number Eight are a promising Belgian band, which they emphasized by winning the Humo's Rock Rally (a talent contest organised by a Belgian magazine, and no it is completely different from the standard Idol contests or whatever). These guys have been influenced by all the right bands, and you can clearly hear them on this record. I'm thinking about Isis, Do Make Say Think, Pelican, Neurosis and other delicious references.

So what's so special about these guys then? Well, listen to the power and the conviction on this record. Listen to how they allow their listeners a breather from time to time, and then drop another bombsheel on your head just when you've recuperated. And most of all: the oldest member in this band is eightteen. The singer Brent Vanneste is actually only 16, but man does his grunt blow me away every time again. I once saw these guys live, and it was absolutely amazing...

True, there is a lot of work still ahead and progress to be made to find their own way, but taking into account the age of these kids and the fact that this is their very first album (which they produced on a mere laptop in their bedroom), you can only gawk and be impressed.

Graveyard - s/t

Is it me or was Norrsken a creative hotbed for Swedish retro rock? The members of that almost-was band have resurfaced in Witchcraft (Magnus Pelander), Dead Man (Kristoffer Sjödahl), and Graveyard (Joakim Nilsson, Rikard Edlund).While the three share commonalities – namely an uncanny ability to play 70's rock as if they're from that era – they also manage to not sound exactly like each other. Graveyard, the latest to release a debut, is a kindred spirit to the more established Witchcraft but hews closer to classic rock than Pentagram-inspired doom. Buffalo's a name that's frequently thrown out there, and I can definitely see a comparison between Graveyard and Volcanic Rock.What that means is this debut is quality stuff. True to their name, the four-piece (along with Nilsson on guitar and vocals and Edlund on bass, there's Alex Sjöberg on drums and Jonatan Ramm on guitar and vocals) is plenty dark, heady psychedelia filtered through a prism of gloomy riffs and bittersweet melodies. Seven of the nine songs have Nilsson singing, and his Chris Cornell-like wail lend a sense of urgency. That, along with some seriously involved playing, are what makes “Evil Ways,” “Lost in Confusion,” “Don't Take Us for Fools,” and “Satan's Finest” such great, memorable tracks.Graveyard's off to an auspicious start. With any luck, they'll obtain the same measure success as Witchcraft and be heard from for years to come. Recommended.

Baroness - First

Here comes Baroness, the latest band to be the recipient of a strong underground buzz. Like the last group to really ride that wave – Mastodon – Baroness’ style is a modern interpretation of classic metal. Raised amidst Iron Maiden, Slayer, and the like, these EP's (First and Second) speaks the language fluently. There’s an emphasis on “smart” playing – technical without being wanky and showboating – and a sense of musical melody that contrasts well with the hoarse bark of the vocals. The songs go by too quickly, but while they’re raging, you get plenty of push-pull dynamics, some incredible playing and riffing, and a sign of greater things to come.

Arthur Brown - The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown

This album originally released in 1968 is a must for all psychedelica adepts. Back in those days this record was ground breaking stuff, comparable with the punch in the face the Sex Pistols gave the establishment in their days.

He was the first one to use a drum machine as a live instrument (back in '73), influenced Ian Gillan from Deep Purple with his freaky falsetto singing, was a pioneer in using stage props (during performances of "Fire" he tended to set his head or at least the strange crownlike thing on his head on fire) and is generally considered to be the first shockrocker.

The album contains the well known single "Fire" (which got to the highest regions of the Billboard Top 100), but has many other good things to offer as well, including excellent and turned inside out covers of James and Screaming Jay Hawkins.

I will let you discover this wild and adventurous psychedelic ride yourself.

Pearl Jam - Live at Pinkpop 1992

Pearl Jam live at Pinkpop '92. This year the festival existed 40 years, and in honor of this event a contest was held to determine the best Pinkpop concert ever. The winner was this one. A truly energetic and driven show from this (in those days still very young) grunge band from Seattle. The stage dive of front man Eddie Vedder from a television crane into the audience is quite significant for this concert and is one of the most rock and roll moments in the history of the festival.

There are unfortunately a lot of very bad bootlegs in circulation with crappy sound quality, however I have managed to find one that sounds rather brilliant. Only disadvantage is that the first song of the set "Even Flow" is cut short to 1 minute 20.

Let it not spoil the fun however, because this is a great performance of a great band in prime condition!

The Sounds of the Catapult

Hello everybody!

Welcome to this new blog called "The Sounds of the Catapult". For years we have organised small gigs in our home town promoting the music we love to the outer world but in the end it all bled dry unfortunately. As there are some positive signs that we might pick it up again, I thought it might be a good idea to open this blog as a means of support and an extra dimension to these gigs for our "fans".

Now what exactly should you comprehend under "the music we love" I hear you ask? The answer is quite simple actually and only has one word: GUITARS!!! We will try our best to provide you with some rocking tunes, going from 60's and 70's bands on to anything more up to date that has a connection with the golden age of rock.

Of course I will have to find my way around this new project first, but I have no doubt we will be firing on all four soonest!
